Equestrian Stabling with Trewen Meadows- Supporting People with Disabilities Through the Power of Horses

21st October, 2025 | posted by IAE Media

Trewen Meadows — formerly known as the Herefordshire RDA — is a charity-led organisation dedicated to supporting people with disabilities and additional needs through equine-assisted activities. As the charity’s impact grew, so did the need for improved facilities, leading to the creation of a new £2.2 million equine therapeutic centre designed to accommodate their expanding programmes.

Our Involvement
Equestrian Stabling by IAE was happy to play a part in this inspiring project by designing and supplying high-quality stabling solutions tailored to Trewen Meadows’ unique requirements.

Our Brief Included:

  • Creating stables for eight existing horses, with additional stables to allow for future growth.
  • Designing a special pony door for Tilly, the centre’s smallest resident at just 11.2hh, so she could see and interact beyond her stable.
  • Installing a dedicated wash bay complete with galvanised steel tie posts to support grooming, bathing, and ground-based therapies.

The Result
Upon completion, 20 stables were built for the centre, including two with pony door frontages. Each stable features a bottom swing door design, giving every horse unrestricted views regardless of height.

The stable frames were constructed from hot-dip galvanised steel and recycled plastic boards, ensuring long-lasting durability and minimal maintenance — ideal for Trewen’s hardworking team. The same materials were used in the wash bays, paired with robust steel tie posts to ensure safety during bathing sessions.

A Successful Partnership
Following the centre’s opening, the IAE team had the pleasure of visiting and seeing the new facilities in action. We were welcomed by a beautifully finished stable block, an impressive indoor arena, and some very relaxed ponies — thanks to Jenny, an equine bodywork expert ensuring the horses were feeling their best after their move.

IAE is proud to have supported Trewen Meadows in their mission to enrich lives through horses. Their new moorland stables will help them continue their vital work across the Herefordshire community — including hippotherapy, a form of physiotherapy performed on horseback that helps improve strength, flexibility, and confidence, all while having fun.

In Their Words

“The stables are working really well, and we’re finding them very practical and the horses love the extra room. We particularly love how bright and airy they are, how modern everything feels, and how easy they are to clean — it makes daily routines so much smoother. The wheelbarrows are great too — super-sized, lightweight, and really easy to clean out! Compared to our previous yard, everything feels like a huge step up in both comfort and functionality.” – Claire Chandler, Centre Manager.

We’re are delighted to have played a part in helping Trewen Meadows continue their life-changing work — but their story is just the beginning.

If you’re planning new stabling or upgrading your current facilities, let’s create spaces where horses and people can thrive together.
