Sand Beds for cubicles are often installed due to the attractive initial installation costs. Various types of sand are available for use, typically though the finer the sand with the least stones in it the better for comfort and management.
Typically 80-100kg of sand per cow per week can be used up and beds should be managed well if consistent acceptance rates and animal health are to be maintained and lying times are to be maximised. Failure to keep this consistency can lead to injury to animals and damage to equipment. A good way to help the management of sand beds is the GT4x4 Rubber grid offered by MEM which can reduce sand usage considerably.
